The new England skipper missed from the spot when the Three Lions bowed out to Portugal four years ago but reckons he now has the maturity to cope with the pressure in what could be his last finals.
"In the knockout stages, there's a chance that penalties could decide one or two matches," said Gerrard.
"Penalties may look easy on TV, but they're pressure situations and you have got to handle that.
"I've learnt from my miss in the last World Cup, and hopefully if we're faced with penalties again we'll be more successful.
