Dirk Kuyt has revealed how one of his finest moments in a Liverpool shirt could easily have seen a different name etched into Merseyside derby folklore.

The Holland international struck a brace of penalties when the Reds triumphed 2-1 at Goodison back in 2007, beginning the No.18's prolific run of form against the Blues.

However, it could all have turned out differently had the pre-match plan gone ahead as proposed by boss Rafael Benitez.

Kuyt told the Official LFC Magazine: "In my second year as a Liverpool player, it was a really tough game and the breaks went our way. I remember Rafa read out his list of penalty takers before the game and I was second choice. Andriy Voronin was first on the list.

Glen Johnson is flying the flag for England.

A handful of Liverpool players are set for action this weekend as the final international break of the season arrives.
Some have already seen playing time for their country, with Luis Suarez featuring for 90 minutes in Uruguay's 2-1 defeat against Germany on Sunday night. He could meet a fellow teammate on Wednesday night when his country takes on Holland.
Glen Johnson is the only Red in England's squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland, with club captain Steven Gerrard missing out for the Three Lions through injury.
Raul Meireles is part of the Portugal squad that is set to face Norway on Saturday night, with the midfielder hoping to right the wrongs of a 1-0 defeat to their opponents in an earlier Group H clash.
Dirk Kuyt will be testing his skills for the Netherlands in a prestigious friendly match against Brazil on Saturday, while a clash against Suarez and Uruguay awaits on Wednesday in another friendly.
Pepe Reina is part of the Spanish squad for Saturday's friendly against the USA, whilst Venezuela awaits on a Tuesday night.
Christian Poulsen is also set for action with Denmark as part of the squad that will face Iceland in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Saturday.

Kuyt could play for Barca

Jan Molby believes Dirk Kuyt would get into the Barcelona team.

Pep Guardiola's men earned their status as Europe's top side with a 3-1 Champions League final triumph over Manchester United last month - and some even believe they are the best team in the history of club football.

With Xavi, David Villa, Lionel Messi, Pedro and Andres Iniesta occupying the forward positions, it's difficult to see where ANY player would fit in.
Speaking to LFC TV, the Dane said:
"I think the training (under Kenny Dalglish) has really benefitted him. There are a lot more touches for individual players and Dirk's first touch has improved because of that.
"I always say this about him - and I mean it: he would walk into any team in the world. Because of the things he gives you.
"He wouldn't be their best footballer but I think he would play in Barcelona's team."

Liverpool Ready £20 Million Offer for Jesus Navas.

Kenny Dalglish has reportedly added another stellar name to his long list of potential summer recruits; that of Sevilla winger Jesus Navas.

Though Navas has been a one-club man for the entirety of his career since joining Sevilla's youth system at the tender age of 15, the Liverpool boss will be very keen to bring the 25 year-old to Anfield in the close season.
It is thought Dalglish has earmarked the eleven-cap Spain international as a perfect foil for his recently-acquired strike partnership of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.
Despite suffering from chronic homesickness, Navas declared himself fit to travel to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup last summer, stating, "To play for your country is the greatest thing and I hope to be able to do so."
The three appearances he chalked up along Spain's successful campaign included a cameo appearance against the Netherlands in the final.

Xabi: : Why I left LFC

654 days since his emotional leaving of Liverpool - and six years on from the glory of Istanbul, Xabi Alonso has a story to tell.

After arriving into a private room deep inside the impressive Real Madrid training complex at Valdebebas, Alonso answered the question of his own press officer when we were asked if 20 minutes would be long enough to conduct this interview.

"No, they can have as long as they need," said the Spaniard, before settling down to open his heart about the triumphs and the torment of his Anfield career in his most in-depth interview - soon to be screened in full on LFC TV - since swapping Merseyside for Madrid.

Alonso's Liverpool story is one of Champions League and FA Cup success, ridiculous long-range goals, defence splitting passes and general midfield mastery.

But the way it all came to an end left something of a bad taste in the mouth.

Fans all over the world were left devastated when the deal to take Alonso to Madrid - a deal which had been on the cards for 12 months after then manager Rafael Benitez confirmed his interest in pursuing the signing of Gareth Barry in the transfer market - finally went through in the summer of 2009.
Suddenly the club's midfield playmaker had gone; the man who made it all happen in the centre of the field and the man who had driven Liverpool to within touching distance of the league title with a record number of points.
Surely he would want to stay and help the Reds take that next, big, elusive step? We had gone so close - why did he have to end his Liverpool love affair now?
The truth can be found by rewinding 12 months when the manager dropped an end of season bombshell on his Spanish star.

"At the end of that season, speaking to Rafa, he told me the situation and that he wanted to sign other players and I could be one of the replacements," he explained. "If an offer would have come, probably I would have been sold. That's when I told myself that the situation had changed - from being a very important player to being one of those who can be sold to get funds to sign other players. I accepted it because I am a professional but you have to realise what your situation is. At the end nothing happened because there was no agreement and we started my last season in Liverpool, but knowing what had happened.

"I had to take it from their point of view. We knew what had happened and once we knew I was going to stay, if the manager was going to pick me then I was going to play as well as possible. There were no personal problems, it was a professional relationship.

"I didn't feel I had a point to prove. I knew what I was capable of giving to the team and what I had given for the four years - and then the last one. In the last one the team was really good, we were winning so many games, beating the top teams home and away and that made a big difference. Because of the silly draws we got at home at the beginning of the season, that's probably why we didn't win the Premier League. We felt we had a very good team, we were very competitive and it was a disappointment not to win the league.
"I didn't know what would happen but at the end of the season, knowing what had happened, I felt if another option was to come I needed to take another step in my career. It was very difficult to take that decision, but it was probably for the best for me because I was not comfortable with that situation and if I had stayed another season it would have been uncomfortable for me.
"I was really happy with the team and my teammates and felt that we could do great things. I was happy on that side but within a club you have to see the big picture and another season would have been too much for me.
May 25, 2005. Istanbul. The Champions League final. It may have been six years ago today but for Xabi, and most probably for everyone else glued to their TV sets or inside the Ataturk Stadium on that famous night, the memories come flooding back as though it all happened yesterday.
"To lift that trophy in the first season was a dream come true," he recalls. "We were lucky to live so many big nights on the way to Istanbul, like Olympiacos, Chelsea, Juventus - those were fantastic nights and it was the perfect start for many of us.

Jamie Carragher: Reasons to be positive

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool have plenty of reason to look forward to 2011-12 with excitement.

While disappointed by ending the season with two defeats and missing out on Europa League qualification, the Reds vice-captain feels the side's form as a whole since Kenny Dalglish returned to the helm in January is cause for optimism."We have to not just look at the last two games," said Carragher. The Brazilian international midfielder has recently emerged on the Anfield radar, with the The People claiming Kenny Dalglish has targeted three players in the position for potential summer transfers.

Dalglish confirmed last week that Liverpool will be chasing the 'highest calibre' of player in the summer, with an attacking midfielder, winger, left back and striker all thought to be on the Merseysiders' agenda.

Since the inception of the Premier League, Liverpool have won 20 meetings, Villa nine and eight have been drawn.

At Villa Park the Reds have won eight and lost five.

Liverpool have won 68 points against Villa in the Premiership - more than against any other team. They have taken 66 points off Newcastle and 61 against Tottenham.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 league visits to Villa Park. Their last defeat here came in February 1998 when, despite Michael Owen scoring an early penalty, they lost 2-1 with ex-Red Stan Collymore scoring twice.

The Reds are looking for their first league double over Villa in five seasons and their 4^th in the Premier League era.

Mirrorfootbal: Liverpool make their move for £20m-rated starlet

Liverpool have made a formal approach for £20million-rated rising star Eden Hazard.

Anfield chiefs asked the young winger’s French side Lille to keep them informed of all developments in the close-season chase for the Belgium international.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is ready to battle it out with other interested parties, such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid, for the signature of one of the finest new talents in European football.

Hazard won’t come cheap. He has been valued at £20million by Lille, and is sure to command a massive fee with such a clamour for his services from the top clubs.Liverpool believe they may have an edge in their attempts to sign the midfielder though, as they have already illustrated they can give first team opportunities to young players.

They will offer the 20-year-old a fast-track into the first team and, even though the Anfield side will not be in the Champions League next season, that could persuade the player to ignore the more obvious claims of other clubs.

Hazard said this week he is ready to move to a “big club” in the summer, but in the past has insisted he is not motivated merely by money and will instead make the move based on a clearly defined career path.

Liverpool will not be put off by the size of the fee, because they are ready to spend big if the player fits in with their new transfer policy and, as a youngster with plenty of room for future growth, Hazard fits that profile perfectly.

He can play wide on either flank or in an attacking midfield role and is an ideal recruit for the Reds, who are looking for reinforcements in all those positions.

Hazard has a contract until 2015, but has indicated he will sit down in the summer and decide his future then, with a move now becoming increasingly likely.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have announced a hike in ticket prices for next season that will be in line with the current inflation rate of around 4%, with season ticket prices rising by a similar figure after the new VAT rates are taken into account.

That means Kop tickets will rise by £1, and in other areas of the ground by £2, which is similar to Manchester United’s ticket price rise for next season.

Manchester City and Tottenham will increase prices by around six per cent, while Everton have announced they will freeze prices for next season because of the biting recession.
